The Wives probably should have been called “The Wife” because it was really mostly about her (understandably!) and she didn’t really explore the wives outside of their relationship to her. The other wives actually seemed annoyed by her quite a bit which she sort of noticed but never explored.
I wish she had included more about her relationship with her husband before he decided to join the army. Their relationship seemed strained before he joined and after, what were the good times like? Were there good times? Why did she upend her life for him? Why did she have a child with him during a period she rarely saw him and kept thinking he was a sociopath? She didn’t seem like she particularly was passionate about having a child. Did she want one? I could never get a good feeling for it.
It is really strange to read a whole, very focused memoir and have so many questions after. If you don’t want to really delve into your personal life, and I wouldn’t, don’t write a memoir.
